Aiming to Provide the Highest Quality Services That Contribute to Our Customers' Security, Health and Wellbeing

I'd like to express my gratitude for your continued patronage and support.

In FY2017, numerous natural disasters occurred in Japan and overseas. And in FY2018, there were an earthquake in northern Osaka and the Heavy Rain of July 2018.Those caused tremendous losses in various areas. I’d like to offer my deepest condolences to the victims who lost their lives, and express my sincerest sympathy to all those who were affected by those tragic events.

Aiming to be the most highly evaluated P&C insurance company, we are currently implementing a Mid-term Management Plan based on the key priorities of increasing the capabilities of front-line personnel and leveraging digital technologies, in order to achieve growth in accordance with quality. In FY2017, the plan’s second year, we were impacted by natural disasters and other events. In other areas, however, plans have been progressing steadily. We will continue to deliver products that our customers value so that we can earn their highest possible evaluation.

Meanwhile, the widespread adoption of mobile devices and the emergence of various digital services in the past few years have started to reshape customer preferences and behavior. Moreover, technological innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), automated driving, robotics and cutting-edge science and technology, is expected to have a tremendous impact on the structure of industry.

In order to stay on top of these changes, we have set up SOMPO Digital Lab, which has been advancing the strategic use of digital technologies. In addition, in FY2017 we established a new organization dedicated to the creation of new business models and new businesses, with a focus on changes in customer needs and the structure of industry. These divisions will hone business ideas originating from both customer needs and technologies. By doing so, I believe that they will help to drive the growth of our existing businesses and achieve innovations that create new sources of value.

As the core company of the Sompo Holdings Group, we will continue to create valuable products and services by thinking things through from the perspectives of customers. In the process, we will lead the way forward to realize the Group Management Philosophy, which calls on us to "contribute to the security, health, and wellbeing of our customers and society as a whole by providing insurance and related services of the highest quality possible."
